The Kadison-Singer problem in mathematics and engineering.

We will see that the famous intractible 1959 Kadison-Singer Problem in C*-algebras is equivalent to fundamental open problems in a dozen different areas of research in mathematics and engineering. This work gives all these areas common ground on which to interact as well as explaining why each area has volumes of literature on their respective problems without a satisfactory resolution.

The Kadison-singer Problem in Mathematics and Engineering: a Detailed Account

We will show that the famous, intractible 1959 Kadison-Singer problem in C∗-algebras is equivalent to fundamental unsolved problems in a dozen areas of research in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and Engineering. This gives all these areas common ground on which to interact as well as explaining why each of these areas has volumes of literature on their respective problems without a satis...

The Other Kadison–singer Problem

Let H be `2 (over C) and let B(H) denote the C*-algebra of all bounded operators on H. Fix an orthonormal basis (en) for H. The atomic masa corresponding to this basis is `∞; equivalently, the algebra of all operators that are diagonalized by the basis (en). The projections in `∞ are exactly the projections onto subspaces spanned by a subset of {en}. That is, P(`∞) ∼= P(N) (here P(A) denotes th...

Discrepancy, Graphs, and the Kadison–Singer Problem

where R ⊂ [n] denotes the set of red elements. In other words, it is possible to partition [n] into two subsets so that this partition is very close to balanced on each one of the test sets Si. Note that a “continuous” partition which splits each element exactly in half will be exactly balanced on each Si; the content of Spencer’s theorem is that we can get very close to this ideal situation wi...
